Semana Santa and Easter
Semana Santa is the Holy Week, the week before Easter. Antigua, Guatemala is known for its festivities; alfombras, or carpets, made of wood and pine needs and other materials. People come from all over the country, and all over Central America. They are made throughout the week, including through then night on Thursday. It is primarily a Catholic festival. Processions are also constantly going, where statues of Jesus and Mary and other saints are paraded through the towns. It is a somber even, with somber band music playing behind the statues. But on Sunday morning, it is a joyful, different event! They have a statue of the resurrected Christ.
Above are some photos of the alfombras being made, as well as the floats with the statues. Men, women, and children walk along side, some carrying incense. I enjoyed being here to be a part of such an event!
